So with the new-to-us red Wii, we had two red controllers, however, one of the controllers is a knock-off brand. Not necessarily bad, but it bothered my wife. The plastic is a different shade of red, the A button is white and not red and the paint is surface applied without a glaze to prevent it from being easily worn away. So it has worn away.
So when the wife wants a new controller, who am I to argue? So I went to ebay. Where I found a matching authentic wiimote and nunchuck. But…………..I didn’t really look too closely at the images! I’ve been so bad at buying used items lately!
So when I got them, I immediately noticed the nunchuck connector was corroded.
I looked at the shipping address (should have done so to begin with!)

So I tried the controller out. I mean, it was a legitimate controller. However, seller said it fully functioned, which it did not. The D-pad had issues with the down press. The 1 button barely worked and 2 didn’t work at all! The joystick on the nunchuck had terrible drift. Oh and that poor nunchuck cable. Wound too tight and chewed up badly.
But it was a genuine Nintendo Wiimote and Nunchuck!
Oh and it also had a missing chunk out of the joystick of the nunchuck…

The connector should have been a huge red flag. no pun intended.
I was able to fix everything. The nunchuck drift was fixed by disassembling the nunchuck, removing the joystick cap and pouring a bit of isopropyl down and moving the joystick around a bunch and blowing excess out with an air compressor. The d-pad and number problems were resolved by simply deep cleaning the board -which was HEAVILY corroded. Houston, remember? I also swapped caps with the non genuine nunchuck, so no chunk missing now. Plus both controllers got an extra deep deep clean of everything just generally.
So it works great now, but I really need to pay better attention to the details!!!!
