The Daylight Savings Time Debate

I think the whole DST / Standard time debate is a bit silly.

You have all these people that want kids “safe” in the winter because going to school in the dark is apparently suicidal.

Then all these people who want to play after work in the summer.

Meanwhile, there are all these complaints about changing time 1 hour and how hard it is… doesn’t anybody else travel during the year? Actually, I swear the people who complain the most, leave their time zone the most. I thought changing your clock was so hard!

Then the silliest suggestions I think are to have the clocks stay consistent, but have working hours adjust by season… really? Hint – all work follows what the government does. And if the government adopted this then it would be no different than the current standard.

What it really comes down to, IMO, is early birds vs night owls. I actually think the DST shift is a fair compromise, but I guess I am in the minority. Most want a consistent time, but good luck getting an agreement on which time should be standard.

BTW, I think Arizona is OK as is, extending summer hours does them no favors.

Does Your Voice Match Your Looks?

I talk to people on a regular basis who I’ve never met in person and I often create a picture in my mind of what they might look like. I bet a lot of people do the same. I think it would be fun to find out what people think we look like from only talking on the phone.

I know one girl who told me a lady met her and said, oh, I thought you were going to be short and fat! (Like a hobbit?! What!) Hmm… not quite!

Just makes me curious. I remember people saying to others, oh I pictured you differently! (Whatever that means!) But I can’t remember a time someone has said that to me. (Whatever that means too!)

Is Deflategate Even Real

Interesting article about the whole deflated footballs thing. I personally don’t really care one way or another, but it was interesting to watch unfold. The one thing that’s bothered me throughout it though is the lack of accountability by the NFL. No one said to the NFL, if psi is so important than why doesn’t the NFL have a “check-in” and handle the footballs during game time? This whole episode is kind of alienating…

Original article is apparently gone, this one works too.

The Crunch in Figs is NOT a Bug’s Skeleton

Had this come up again today…

Years ago I listened to a speaker whose entire presentation culminated with the declaration that figs don’t have seeds, that the crunchy bits are insect parts! Gross right? Totally ruined Italy for me since figs grow like weeds there. Only thing is, it was total bs. While partly true that bug(s) get trapped in the flower as part of the pollination process, the developing fruit completely breaks down any trapped insect(s) with various enzymes.

It’s Surprising how much this story spread and how many still believe this myth -what with google and all. Figs DO have seeds! You should be able to enjoy your next fig treat in peace. I recently had a fig pizza that was especially delicious.

Prediction or Already Reality?

A couple weeks ago i posted about BYU needing a med school. I was just watching some x-files and saw this pop up on the screen. Now that is a spooky x-file! They had Scully treated at a BYU medical center that hasn’t even been built………… YET!

Driver Tells Train to Just Go Around!

I’ve been driving around Salt Lake quite a bit lately and I have to say, it’s good to see everyone has adapted so well to the Trax commuter rail!

So far, I’ve seen a truck stop inside the crossing arm causing the Trax operator to stop the train, then the truck driver hilariously tried to wave the train to go around – awesome! What was he thinking? (Squeeze on in! Plenty of room!)

Then there was the car that saw the lights start flashing and slammed on the brakes… except the car was already right under the crossing arm… clunk.

What can you do when you see these things but laugh?

New BYU Med School?

This is so crazy to me. I was a consultant on the new Provo High field and it just shows some seriously poor foresight by the city and school district. However, if BYU were to buy it, it may not be a total waste.

My wish would be that with the new Hospital being built, BYU would step up and start their own medical program. They could work with the new hospital hand in hand about what is needed. And with all that land close to the hospital, you can’t get much more ideal than that to get classrooms close to a teaching hospital! Seriously, people at BYU need to get it done. I’ve always thought it’s a bit of an embarrassment that BYU doesn’t have a medical program.
