Region 7 golf: Timpview 2nd after 2 tournaments

By Brian E. Preece herald Correspondent – | Aug 17, 2017
Timpview’s Michael Taylor shot a 71 on Wednesday at East Bay to help the T’Birds take the lead in Region 7 golf. Taylor has the lead for individual medalist honors.

For Timpview head golf coach Jeff Ward, both his team and the competition in the newly instituted 5A classification remains a bit of a mystery.

The Thunderbirds were a juggernaut in 4A golf, earning state titles in 2013 and 2015 as well as the silver trophy in 2014. Last year, the Thunderbirds finished fourth, but just three strokes from another state title.

But this year’s Timpview squad is a bit on the young and experienced side. According to Ward, of the 14 players he kept on the golf team, nine are freshmen and sophomores and only two return with any kind of varsity experience.

However, one of those experienced players is senior Michael Taylor, who after two Region 7 golf tournaments is in second place overall. He shot 2-under-par 70 at the first match at River Oaks and then used 74 strokes at the par-72 East Bay layout Wednesday.

“Michael (Taylor) is a good golfer and just a good kid,” said Ward, who will lean on his senior as his young squad learns the ropes of varsity golf.

It’s not that the Thunderbirds don’t have talent, as Timpview (630) is currently in second place in its new league, though 25 shots behind Corner Canyon (605). Brighton (647), Alta (649) and Cottonwood (650) are tightly bunched in positions 3-5, but only two of those three schools can advance to the state tournament.

Jordan is way back at 688 but boasts (so far) the league’s top golfer in Zach Cheney, who has posted 70-69 (3-under) in the opening matches.

Ward had high praise for the Chargers.

“Corner Canyon is a very deep team, they will be tough to beat.”

Timpview’s other key players will be Tommy Rosenvall, Nate Giles, Kendrick Stewart, Brody Olson, Wyatt Osmond and Campbell Knell. Giles and Knell are both freshmen. Rosenvall, a sophomore, sits in fifth overall at 6-over par.

“The key with a young team is getting better every week. I know it sounds like a cliché but it’s what it is. We have a lot of potential but it’s about the kids working hard, putting the time in the summer, and playing tournament golf.”

League rival Corner Canyon might be the team to beat, but much is unknown about 5A this year. Box Elder, East, Maple Mountain, Murray and Skyline are teams Ward expects to be in the hunt.

Meanwhile, he hopes that tradition and hard work will propel his team right into the mix come early October.

Next week Timpview will head north for its tournament at Old Mill Golf Club in Salt Lake County.

Region 8 opens its league tournament play on Thursday at East Bay.
